VALHEN’s 2013 Hispanic College Institute

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

- 2.5 GPA or above,

- current high school sophomore (rising junior) or junior (rising senior),

- enrolled full-time in a Virginia high school

Online applications available at http://2013hci.eventbrite.com. There is NO cost to the student. The application deadline is slated for March 15, 2013. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for early consideration. 100 spaces available.

The program provides clear and practical college application and financial aid information, and allows students to have the opportunity to engage with successful Hispanic leaders and role models who will help inform them about career and educational opportunities. If admitted, students will:

 - live on a college campus 

- receive help writing a college application essay 

- participate in NASA-sponsored STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workshops 

- learn and/or improve public speaking, presentation and interviewing skills 

- experience increased awareness of community-focused civic engagement 

- understand the financial aid and the FAFSA application processes 

- acquire knowledge on available scholarships and other types of financial aid 

- meet and engage with Hispanic leaders and role models to learn about their career successes 

- have the opportunity to meet with college admissions and financial aid representatives 

- compete for available scholarships 

- participate in a College, Career and Community Resource Fair

Free bus transportation will be provided for students to and from Virginia State University.

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is proud to present its Annual Talent Hunt Program. The Talent Hunt Program strives to provide young American individuals an opportunity to develop, express, and receive recognition for their talents. This Talent Hunt has been a proud tradition of the fraternity since 1949, and that same enthusiasm still exists today. We take great pride in recognizing talented youth. An essential part in locating individuals for our program is nominations we receive from parents, principals, guidance counselors, teachers and churches. Participation is solicited in the following areas:
1. Music: Vocal, Instrumental, Piano Solo (classical, semi-classical, gospel, jazz)
                [printed music must be provided for the judges].
2. Dance: Interpretive movement to music (ballet, modern dance, tap).
3. Drama/Speech: Poetry, readings, orations, monologues. (script must be provided for the judges)

$2000 College Scholarship - HELEN P. SHROPSHIRE HUMAN RIGHTS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Applications Being Accepted for First Helen P. Shropshire Human Rights Memorial Scholarship

Applications for the first Helen P. Shropshire Human Rights Memorial Scholarship are being accepted now through Feb. 15 by the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission. The scholarship is in memory of Shropshire, a founding member of the commission and a lifetime human rights advocate and educator. 

 

 

The scholarship committee will evaluate applicants based on community involvement, academic achievement, exemplary citizenship, written essay and endorsement letters. The scholarship recipient will be honored at the commission’s annual Awards Program on March 21 and will receive a $2,000 scholarship for books, tuition or other course-related fees. 

 

 

Eligible applicants must reside in the City of Virginia Beach and be a current high school senior (public, private or home school) who demonstrates an affinity for community service and contributes to the promotion of human rights that benefit Virginia Beach residents.

 

 

An application form must be submitted with the required essay, as well as two letters of endorsement.
